A new flagship Burns Festival for Edinburgh presenting the very best in traditional and contemporary art and culture from across Scotland and Beyond, celebrating the life and legacy of Robert Burns.
Burns&Beyond with Johnnie Walker is a new event created and produced by Unique Events, which has already established itself as part of Edinburgh’s festiuval calendar, presenting a packed programme of free and ticketed events for all ages across the city centre, supported by the City of Edinburgh Council, Essential Edinburgh, Scottish Government’s Scotland’s Winter Festivals and title partner Johnnie Walker.
The centerpiece of the Festival has been a large-scale installation in the capital’s historic St Giles’ Cathedral, which in 2019 presented Luke Jerram’s stunning Museum of the Moon installation and welcomed over 25,000 people during the week-long event (an increase of 113% from the same period the previous year) and in 2020 to celebrate the alignment of Burns Night and Chinese New Year, over 300 Chinese Lanterns filled the cathedral and audiences also enjoyed a series of special performances in the landmark building.
For the second year running, the ‘Not-So-Traditional Burns Supper’ at Freemason’s Hall was a sell-out event, presenting a raucous night of comedy, music, ceilidh and whisky, as were the free Bairns’ Burns Supper and Major Minor Music Club event.
The Burns&Beyond Culture Trail allows audiences to journey across the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh through eight venues, enjoying everything from a Silent Disco to Whisky Tasting with Johnnie Walker to learn about our national drink and raise a toast to Burns, along with live muci performances from artists such as Aidan O’Rourke, Deacon Blue’s Ricky Ross, Kathryn Joseph, Kinnaris Quintet, Rozi Plain, Leith’s ‘Out of the Ordinary’, Pictish Trail and a riotous rendition of Burns’ Tam O’Shanter performed by Kevin Williamson of Neu! Reekie together with the Kixx Collective.
The new Burns&Beyond Festival Club in the world famous Assembly Rooms presented a series of sold-out shows from the cream of Scottish musical talent including Edwyn Collins, KT Tunstall, Tide Lines, Rachel Sermanni and Chris Stout & Catriona McKay.
The festival has been deemed an overwhelming success by both audiences and media and will become an annual fixture in Edinburgh’s festivals calendar.
