Unique was engaged to create and produce a new National Arts Festival for Scotland, artist led and inspired by the spirit of Robert Burns; Burns an’ a’ That!
The Festival was launched in Ayrshire in 2002 and Unique developed it through to 2007. It was funded by the Scottish Executive, Scottish Enterprise, South Ayrshire Council, East Ayrshire Council and VisitScotland.
Held over 10 days, the Festival brought Scottish and international artists together in a eclectic programme set over several venues. The flagship event of the festival was a classical concert held in the grounds of Culzean Castle with collaborations from artists such as Lou Reed and Patti Smith with Scottish artists like Eddi Reader and Phil Cunningham alongside Scotland’s national orchestras, the RSNO and Scottish Opera Orchestra and Choir. |
Artists such as Pete Docherty, the Proclaimers, Mylo, Edwyn Collins and Lloyd Cole were attracted to the Festival as it allowed them to perform outwith their usual repertoire. The largest audiences attended in the final year of our involvement.
As part of the festival, Pete Irvine created the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award. Open internationally, it recognised the work of the individual who put humanitarian ideals before all others and was presented at Culzean Castle using giant screens. Winners included Sir John Sulston, the geneticist; Clive Stafford Smith, the human rights lawyer and Pius Ncube, the Archbishop of Bulawayo.
